How dogs are able to swim without being taught.

Dogs are born with their natural ability--to swim. A month- old puppy that has not been in water will move its legs in a swimming motion if you hold it over a tub of water. By the time it is two months old, a large pup may swim well. Dogs and other for-legged animals have two advantages. When they enter the water, they are already in a floating position. And because their weight is evenly distributed, they can float easily. Dogs of some breeds can swim long distances. Some dogs, however, are water shy. It could take a lot of coaxing to get a reluctant dog to dog- paddle.
